Tell us about your business; how successful is it and why is it unique?

At Go Green Solar, who we are as individuals is intimately connected to who we are as a business. Not only do we live with solar energy, but we also live solar energy.

Having spent years cultivating a detailed understanding of green technology, we strongly believe that green energy makes economic sense. By implementing green energy into our communities, we will also improve the air we breathe and reduce the negative impact that fossil fuels have on our planet.

We are aware that millions of people around the world do not have access to basic electricity. When green energy becomes mainstream, with economies of scale, it is our belief that renewable energy will be accessible to everyone. All people deserve to have access to reliable, efficient energy. This is what we hope to see, and this is why we are steadfast in our pursuit of a sustainable future for our planet.

At Go Green Solar, we understand that a need for change that has been thrust upon our world. We have the foresight to visualize the changes that will occur in the years to come and plan to play an integral role in creating a sustainable world for future generations.

How is your business involved with the community you serve?

First and foremost, the conception of community that we subscribe to extends to the world at large. At Go Green Solar, we are dedicated to serving our community, both locally and globally.

In our local community, we are all active volunteers with GRID Alternatives, a non-profit organization that installs solar systems for low-income families in California.

For the city of Corona, Go Green Solar installed the world’s first grid-tie solar-powered bus shelter that produces 1 kW. The unit generates enough energy to power its LED lamps and still produce excess energy, which is sent back into the grid. This means that the city is making money off of the unit purchased from Go Green Solar. Investing in microgeneration, such as this Bus Shelter, is a great way to generate power in our communities.

We have also done charity work outside of the United States. In 2009, we teamed up with Joy Outreach to deliver a small solar electric system to a family in Mexico that did not have access to power. The solar panels, charge controller, and battery system provides enough energy to power LED light bulbs inside the family’s home.

We also worked with the Unleash Power for the People Foundation to help a poverty-stricken Elementary School in the Philippines. We supplied a complete 1.1 kW solar system to Bashoy-Abucot Elementary School in the rural town of Benguet, which previously had no electricity.

Go Green Solar is currently in the beginning stages of a project that will promote the widespread adoption of photovoltaic technology, incrementally solving society’s energy troubles through micro-generation. By implementing smart grid technology into a plug and play solar system, we will not only make solar energy easier to use and more readily available, but we will work also create a more reliable grid. With our plug and play solar systems, households will soon be producing clean energy during peak hours of the day, which can be fed back into the grid. This smart grid technology will help utilities prevent rolling blackouts/brownouts, benefiting society as a whole.

What would a $250k grant mean to your business plan and how will you utilize the funds to ensure long-term growth and stability?

This financial opportunity would allow us to better serve our community by making green energy more accessible to the population at large.

These funds will enable us to meet the growing demand in this market. As of right now, we are struggling to get quotes out to all of our prospective customers. With the help of Chase, we will be able to hire the right salespeople and customer service representatives to keep our business growing.

This grant would also go towards continuing the research and development of our SunPlug Plug n’ Play Solar Kit, a concept that we have been developing since 2008. This smart grid plug and play system will extend access to solar energy to a significantly larger demographic. Because this plug and play kit is easily “installed” by plugging directly into the grid via power outlets, it gives ratepayers more mobility. With these plug and play systems, ratepayers who adopt our plug and play solar kits will be able to safely produce up to 1,000 AC Watts per outlet/branch circuit. This makes our plug and play kit perfect for rate-payers whose living situations change frequently.

In our lab, we will continue to develop our existing prototype, which has the potential to revolutionize the way society uses and understands energy. This funding opportunity will help us finance the research and development of successive subsystems to improve upon this technology.

Our plug and play system will also benefit the “Authorities Having Jurisdiction,” or AHJs. Without the burden of inspecting these small plug and play systems, AHJs have more time to focus on large-scale solar developments and more important projects in their respective territories.

Utilities will also reap the benefits of our labor. Not only will this venture allow utilities to appropriately allocate their attention to larger-scale projects, but it will enable them to manage photovoltaic information from homes on the grid. As our smart grid plug and play solar kit becomes available, utilities can expect to have more involvement and influence on energy flow within the grid.

Our products will be more than capable of being delivered and installed on the same day they are purchased. We plan to make our plug and play solar kit available online and in consumer stores.

To ensure long-term growth and stability of our business, we will focus on building our team and continuing our research of this plug and play technology.

What types of challenges can you identify with your plan and how will you overcome them?

One challenge that we will face will be driving down the cost to ensure that all people have access to clean energy. To reduce our prices, we must first invest in research and development. This will allow us to find the most cost-efficient materials and methods of manufacture. Once our product is ready to go to market, we need to sell as many units as we possibly can. It will be absolutely imperative that we convince suppliers to work with us. As demand for our product grows, this will prove to be an obstacle we can overcome.

Another challenge will be gaining the acceptance of utilities and the various AHJs (Authorities Having Jurisdiction) across the nation, and influencing public policy to make way for this new technology. Current regulations could make it difficult to get this product to our customers. Once our product has had enough exposure, these powers will surely make way for this innovative technology.

To ensure that utilities and AHJs will be on board with our goal, we will run an educational campaign focused on solar energy. By showing politicians, utilities, and AHJs how solar energy can be safe and effective, we hope to garner support for our venture. With suitable public policy in place the right prices for consumers, we can expect to grow exponentially.

Describe the talent on your team and how they make your business successful.

Go Green Solar is a diverse collection of people who are passionate about clean energy. We have been successful thus far because we are knowledgeable in the field and we genuinely care about helping people get started with clean energy. We know what we’re talking about, and we want to help our customers make informed decisions when they buy from us.

Not only have we dedicated our lives to becoming experts in field of clean energy, but we also have quite a mixed skill-set. Because we are such a small company, we naturally have to wear many different hats. Our team has technicians, salespeople, engineers, and a computer programmer, but all of our employees must be able to do a little bit of everything to keep operations running smoothly.

All of our team members are volunteers with a nonprofit called GRID Alternatives. While working on a volunteer installation in Southern California, we were introduced to David Donaldson, who became one of our engineers shortly thereafter. Donaldson has since played a key role in our lab conducting research and development.

Our varied cultural backgrounds make Go Green Solar an interesting melting pot. Ethnic backgrounds include Indian, Vietnamese, Japanese, and Mexican. With our youngest employee at 23 years old and eldest at 53 years old, the age-range of employees at Go Green Solar is also quite significant.

Several of us are also accomplished martial artists in San Soo Kung Fu and Muay Thai. The discipline required in these sports has definitely translated into our work lives.
